The last election saw Fairhopers vote on a bill to allow motorized Golf Carts to travel freely on open roads on the bay side of business 98. Many locals have taken full advantage of the new ruling opting to use licensed golf carts instead of the normal Land Rovers we're accustomed to seeing. Folks seem to like it so much that the council has actually pushed a bill forward to restrict downtown Fairhope to Golf Carts only. Although it sounds crazy, many towns across the south have already implemented this status. Just think... No more F-550 Trucks parked along Fairhope Ave with 15 feet of tail hanging out into the lane, no more worrying about hitting shopping bag toting jaywalkers, and parking spaces immediately double.
The Bill, prop 219 will be voted on in our next election and will be a large talking point until then. Many car owners are voicing their complaints about parking and their restrictions to getting downtown, but one planning commission has an idea that may kill two birds with one stone. Downtown visitors will park in the Big Lots or Agave parking lots and will be shuttled to and from downtown from 8am-5pm, similar to the arrangement at the annual arts and crafts fest. The big difference will be that instead of shuttle buses the plan calls for a fleet of carriages drawn be flocks of overly abundant Canadian Geese.
Only time will tell if the bill gets approved by the people, but as traffic worsens in the area we believe that it will gain support.

So who will own the golf cart rental business?
ReplyDeleteGreat question John!
DeleteProbably the mayor...or the City Council.
DeleteA permanent pedestrian zone would actually be a good idea. Maybe loose the golf carts and Canadian geese.
DeleteIt will stop many from going downtown. Some of us don't have time to wait on a shuttle golf cart.

DeleteThat's asinine!
ReplyDeleteThis golf cart thing is a great idea and long overdue!! Range Rovers and F550s are over-rated. Safety and comfort too. Cart restrictions in favor of scooters and bicycles should be next!! How about pedestrian only served by light rail?

ReplyDeleteMore government intrusion in our lives. Punish us all for the few large SUV and truck owners? Why not ban them from parking downtown and limit them to the parking garage only. Why punish those who cannot afford to purchase the golf carts? Maybe the city will subsidize our purcahse?
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I love how progressy Fairhope can be. We love our dog trainer in Fairhope https://g.pave/south-coast-canine
